Building Local Alpha Community
By Jim Charlton
Many local church leaders running the Alpha course are interested in connecting with others in their communities. Here are some discussion & action points on that might happen.
Who would be involved in a Local Alpha Community?
- Anyone running the course or interested in running the course in any given area. Invite all, those who can participate, will.
- Typically, an initiator is needed. A person (one or more) willing to pick up the phone and take the first step. Could that be you?
- Don’t wait for a huge crowd. You can start small and grow from there. Wherever two or more are gathered in my name…
What would a local Alpha community do?
- Get to know one another
- Encourage peer-to-peer networking
- Meet together and discuss what is going well, where are the struggles, etc.
- Plan joint events (Holy Spirit retreat weekends/days; Alpha training and introductory events
- Come alongside one another
- Plan an Alpha Invitation
Where & When would this happen?
- Wherever convenient for people to gather and share – coffee shop, a home, a local church building, restaurant – you can start with a conference call.
- Meet when you can initially, then you can establish a set date, e.g. the 2d Wed every other month, etc.
Why build local Alpha community?
- To promote unity in the Body of Christ;
- The Great Commission - to help spread the number of Alpha Courses in the community – more opportunities for people to hear and respond to the Gospel;
- To establish and build relationships with co-laborers in Alpha.
- Because you can meet some really cool people and get all kinds of ideas about how to improve other aspects of your personal relationship with Christ and your ministry.
How can I start?
- Pray & Plan
- Discover – get names other local churches running Alpha from Alpha USA website, list other churches you know running (or have run) the course, locate any local Alpha Advisors, make contact with other people from your area who you meet at any Alpha events
- Proceed – contact those on the lists you’ve created – even if it is one other person – and get together. Brainstorm how you can discover and invite others, always have a future date to get together.
